The Faculty of Astrological Studies was founded in
London on 7th June 1948 at 19.50 BST. Its aim, then and
now, is to raise the standard of astrological education and to provide
a first class professional training for the practising astrologer.
Over the years more than 10,000 students from over 90 countries have
enrolled on the Faculty’s courses. The Faculty is internationally recognised
and respected and, as the list of alumni shows, many of the world’s
leading astrologers have been students of the Faculty. Liz Greene,
Mike Harding, Charles Harvey, Julia Parker, Melanie Reinhart and Howard
Sasportas are just a few of the Faculty’s Diploma holders who went
on to become leading lights in the world of modern astrology. The Diploma
of the Faculty of Astrological Studies is a highly regarded professional
qualification, and Faculty Diploma holders are entitled to use the
letters D.F.Astrol.S. and to be included in the Faculty’s Directory
of Astrological Consultants.
The Faculty’s Courses
The Faculty aims to guide its students through astrology’s
abundance and complexity, as they gradually build their knowledge,
learn to think for themselves, and to use astrology with skill and
confidence. The Faculty’s courses are designed to provide a comprehensive,
thorough and ethically aware professional training for the modern consultant
astrologer.
Foundation Course
The Foundation Course is designed for complete newcomers
to astrology and for those who wish to consolidate their previous knowledge
and reading within a structured course. The Foundation Course provides
a basic understanding of the language of astrology and the ability
to calculate and interpret a birth chart. It also includes an introduction
to the astronomy of the solar system, an overview of the history of
western astrology, and students will be encouraged to start exploring
their own ideas about some of the philosophical questions that arise
from the study and practice of astrology.
The Foundation Course is designed in three one-term
Modules, taught over one year at Classes and estimated to take Distance
Learning students one year to complete. There are no formal admission
requirements, although basic mathematical skills and good written and
verbal communication skills are necessary. Students for whom English
is a foreign language should have the ability to write in English reasonably
well. Completion of the first three Modules is a significant achievement
in itself and will provide Students with a solid basis for more advanced
study.
Diploma Course
The Foundation and Diploma courses are designed as
one complete, comprehensive training from beginner to professional
astrologer level. The topics and skills taught at Foundation level
are developed and extended further in the Diploma course, along with
the introduction of new techniques and skills. The Diploma course consists
of eight modules and is designed for students who have already completed
the Foundation Course or a similar course of study. The Diploma course
is divided into three progressively more complex levels of study, and
is likely to take students between two and three years to complete.
Students are welcome to enrol on any of the Faculty’s modules whether
or not they intend to gain the Faculty’s qualifications. Students
may simply wish to study only one or two modules in order to develop
their individual astrological knowledge and expertise.
Studying with the Faculty
The Faculty’s courses are modular, providing flexibility
and choice, enabling students to study by a variety of methods as it
suits them - by Distance Learning, live Classes or at Summer School.
Students are free to choose, module by module, whichever method of
learning most suits their circumstances at the time.
Distance Learning
The advantage of Distance Learning is that students
can begin their studies at any time and work through the modules at
their own pace. Each module comes with a six-month period of tuition,
during which students have the one-to-one support of their own personal
tutor.
Classes and weekend seminars
Classes are held in central London. The advantage
of studying astrology at live classes is the opportunity to meet like
minded people and to learn from the experience and examples of other
students. Weekend Seminars in London cover a variety of core course
modules and other optional specialist subjects. A Saturday fast track
Foundation Course is held each year, beginning in January. Modules
held at weekends in London
are particularly popular with Distance Learning students, providing
a good balance between home study and live classes.
Summer School
The Faculty’s annual Summer School brings together
students from all over the world for weekend and week-long programmes
suitable for both beginners and experienced astrologers. It is also
possible to study complete Diploma Modules at the Faculty’s Summer
School.
Faculty tutors
All the Faculty’s tutors are holders of the Faculty’s
Diploma and have a great deal of astrological and tutoring experience.
Their aim is to ensure that students have a rewarding and individually
supported learning experience. Whichever method of studying is chosen,
the tutors support students throughout each module, review their work,
suggest extra reading, provide specific examples and generally ensure
that students have all the guidance and feedback they need to work
through to the successful completion of each module.
Qualifying with the Faculty
There is no pressure to take any of the formal exams
or assessments and many students study the Faculty’s courses simply
for pleasure. Many students do, however, decide to work towards gaining
the Faculty’s Certificate and Diploma qualifications. All examinations
and assessments, which carry credits towards qualification, are undertaken
by students in their own time at home. On gaining the Faculty’s Diploma
and signing the Code of Ethics, graduates are entitled to use the letters
D.F.Astrol.S. after their name and to be listed in the Faculty’s directory
of consultant astrologers. External candidates are also eligible to gain the Certificate and Diploma
qualifications provided they complete and pass all the Examinations
and written assignments.
Academic options at Diploma level
The successful completion of relevant
modules on the MA course in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at Bath
Spa University College and/or the MA course in the Study of Mysticism
and Religious Experience at the University of Kent, Canterbury are
now accepted as part qualification towards the Faculty’s Diploma.
